Uniper SE operates as a German multinational energy company focused on power generation, global commodity trading, and energy infrastructure, with activities spanning more than 40 countries including core markets in Germany, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and the Netherlands. The company generates electricity through its Green Generation segment featuring emission-free hydroelectric, nuclear, wind, and solar power plants; its Flexible Generation segment encompassing gas-fired, combined cycle gas turbine, coal, and oil-fired power and heat plants alongside energy services; and its Greener Commodities segment covering natural gas sales to distributors, industrial customers, power operators, and international markets, gas storage operations with over seven billion cubic meters capacity, procurement of fuels including liquefied natural gas and coal, trading of carbon dioxide certificates and green energy certificates, as well as import, trade, and processing of green molecules such as hydrogen, biomethane, and ammonia. Founded in 2016 from the separation of E.ON's fossil fuel assets and headquartered in Düsseldorf, Germany, Uniper SE functions as a state-owned enterprise and subsidiary of UBG Uniper Beteiligungsholding GmbH, employing approximately 6,900 people and maintaining a diversified portfolio that supports energy security and the transition to low-carbon solutions. Recent developments include a €5 billion investment plan through 2030 targeting 15-20 gigawatts of generation capacity with at least half from renewables like solar, wind, hydro, and decarbonizable gas plants; strategic partnerships such as long-term gas contracts with Tourmaline Oil Corp. and Woodside, collaborations with Norwegian Hydrogen and HydePoint for mid-sized green hydrogen projects, and expansion of LNG sales in Asia; recommissioning of the Happurg pumped storage plant with €250 million investment expected online by 2028; a 400-job cost-efficiency reduction amid LNG portfolio growth to 250-300 terawatt-hours annually; leadership changes with Michael Lewis as CEO, Christian Barr as CFO, and Fabienne Twelemann as CPTO; and a 2024 arbitration award of over €13 billion against Gazprom for gas supply shortfalls.
