Business
Tingo Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: TIO) operates as a fintech and agri-fintech holding company focused on financial inclusion for rural farming communities in Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East; it provides smartphone-based platform services including device-as-a-service with pre-loaded applications, the Nwassa digital agriculture ecosystem connecting farmers to markets, services, and resources for seed-to-sale activities, an online automobile insurance after-market platform offering repair connections, membership services such as gas recharges, shopping, claims settlements, roadside assistance, and loyalty points; TingoPay, a B2C/B2B super-app in partnership with Visa delivering payments, e-wallets, foreign exchange, and merchant services; Tingo Foods, processing raw foods into products like rice, pasta, and noodles; Tingo DMCC, a Dubai-based commodities trading and agricultural export platform; and Magpie Invest, a proprietary online stock trading platform with margin financing, agri-marketplace, airtime top-ups, utility payments, bill-pay, lending, and insurance. The company, founded in 2001 and headquartered in Montvale, New Jersey, conducts operations through segments including Verticals and Technology, Online Stock Trading, and Comprehensive Platform Services, primarily in Nigeria, China with approximately 130 insurance branches, Ghana, and other emerging markets; it previously emphasized mobile phone assembly in Nigeria before shifting production to China in 2018. In February 2023, the company, formerly MICT, Inc., completed a merger with Tingo Inc.'s operating business and rebranded to Tingo Group, Inc., enhancing its access to U.S. capital markets; it announced operations commencement in Ghana in November 2022 and a trade partnership with the All Farmers Association of Nigeria; however, it faced significant challenges including a 2023 Hindenburg Research report alleging fraud, SEC charges in December 2023 against founder Dozy Mmobuosi and related entities for fabricated financials, a U.S. district court default judgment in September 2024 imposing a $250 million fine, Nasdaq trading halt, and reported cessation of activities by December 2024 with its website up for sale.
