Business
Ajinomoto Co., Inc. manufactures and markets a broad range of food products, seasonings, amino acids, pharmaceuticals, and functional materials worldwide. Founded in 1909 and headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, the company operates through three primary segments: seasonings and foods, which includes umami seasonings such as AJI-NO-MOTO monosodium glutamate, processed foods, frozen foods, dry soup mixes, edible oils, beverages, and dairy products; healthcare, encompassing amino acid infusions, enteral nutrition, biopharmaceutical contract development and manufacturing services, and gene therapy-related offerings; and functional materials, featuring Ajinomoto build-up film (ABF) for semiconductors, specialty chemicals, animal nutrition products, and moisturizing agents like AJIDEW and Amisoft. It serves consumer markets, food manufacturers including Nestle, and industrial clients across Asia, the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and other regions through dozens of subsidiaries such as Ajinomoto North America, Ajinomoto Philippines Corporation, and Ajinomoto India Private Limited. Recent developments include the October 2025 licensing agreement with Astellas Pharma Inc. for biopharmaceutical development and manufacturing technology; investments in v2food Pty Ltd for sustainable foods in August 2025, Somite Therapeutics Inc. for AI-driven iPS cell differentiation in June 2025, and Enhanced Medical Nutrition Inc. for surgical nutrition in March 2025; the announcement to build a new factory at Ajinomoto Philippines Corporation in August 2025; development of culture media supplements with Forge Biologics to enhance gene therapy productivity in November 2025 following its prior acquisition; plans to sell its stake in Ajinomoto Althea, a U.S. aseptic fill-finish CDMO, in April 2025; and ongoing share repurchase programs alongside organizational changes in February 2025.
