Business
Methanex Corporation is the world's largest producer and supplier of methanol to major international markets, including North America, Asia Pacific, Europe, and South America. The company manufactures methanol and supplies it for various applications such as adhesives, coatings, plastics, textiles, paints, solvents, polyester resins and fibers, and silicone products. Methanex also focuses on emerging uses of methanol in cleaner-burning fuels for transportation, marine fuel applications, and the production of biodiesel and dimethyl ether (DME). Founded in 1953 and headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia, Methanex operates a global network of methanol production facilities and manages distribution to customers worldwide. A significant recent development for Methanex includes the acquisition of OCI Global's international methanol business, completed in June 2025 for approximately $2.05 billion. This acquisition expanded Methanex's asset portfolio with two world-scale methanol production facilities in Beaumont, Texas, enhancing its North American presence and access to natural gas feedstock. OCI holds a 13 percent ownership interest in Methanex post-transaction. The acquisition is expected to generate around $30 million in annual cost synergies through reduced logistics and administrative costs. Methanex is integrating the acquired assets into its global operations and strategic plans, including debt reduction and leveraging operational expertise. The company is also advancing sustainability initiatives such as producing methanol from renewable sources and exploring low-carbon methanol including green and e-methanol options at select sites. Further, Methanex pursues growth opportunities in the marine methanol fuel market and maintains strong financial discipline with a focus on deleveraging and operational efficiency.
