The company operates through three primary segments: Contract Logistics, which delivers value-added and dedicated transportation services including material handling, consolidation, sequencing, sub-assembly, cross-dock operations, kitting, repacking, warehousing, returnable container management, and rail lift services to support inbound logistics for industrial customers and retailers; Intermodal, which coordinates local and regional drayage moves via company-managed terminals using owner-operators, company equipment, and third-party providers for steamship-truck, rail-truck, and related support services; and Trucking, which conducts dry van, flatbed, heavy-haul, and refrigerated operations transporting automotive parts, machinery, building materials, paper, food, consumer goods, furniture, steel, and other metals. Additional services encompass air and ocean freight forwarding, customs brokerage, company-managed brokerage for individual freight shipments, and global trade management. Universal Logistics Holdings serves industries such as automotive, retail and consumer goods, steel and metals, energy, and manufacturing, as well as other transportation companies aggregating shipper loads, utilizing a network of union and non-union employee drivers, owner-operators, and contract carriers. Founded in 1932 and headquartered in Warren, Michigan, the company, formerly known as Universal Truckload Services, Inc. until its name change in 2016, maintains approximately 10,800 employees and over 90 active value-added programs across its asset-light model. Recent developments include the acquisition of Parsec, LLC, Parsec Intermodal of Canada ULC, and OB Leasing, LLC in late 2024, enhancing terminal management capabilities for Class I, regional, and short-line railroads in North America with nearly 2,100 additional employees; completion of a major specialty development project in Stanton, Tennessee contributing significantly to contract logistics growth; opening of a new intermodal terminal in Tacoma, Washington with 2.5 acres of secured container yard; integration of 2025 Peterbilt 579EV electric vehicles into its fleet for sustainability in Southern California; recognition as a 2024 Supplier of the Year by General Motors; and reporting record fourth-quarter 2024 operating revenues of $465.1 million, driven by 52.7% growth in contract logistics.
