Business
Volta Inc. (NYSE: VLTA) operates a network of smart media-enabled electric vehicle charging stations primarily in the United States. The company deploys, owns, operates, and maintains Level 2 AC charging stations equipped with large-format digital advertising screens; provides installation, operation, and maintenance services; utilizes its PredictEV software tool for forecasting grid capacity, EV penetration, and charger utilization; and monetizes through advertising revenue while offering free charging to users at high-traffic destination sites including retail centers, grocery stores, pharmacies, parking lots, restaurants, schools, and universities. Volta partners with national and regional real estate owners, retailers, municipalities, and businesses across approximately 31 U.S. states and territories, serving EV drivers and advertisers targeting audiences along the path to purchase; it also sells charging stations to select partners. Founded in 2010 and headquartered in San Francisco, California, Volta went public in 2021 via a merger with Tortoise Acquisition Corp. II. Shell USA, Inc., a subsidiary of Shell plc, acquired Volta in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $169 million in March 2023, integrating its network of over 3,000 charge points and a development pipeline exceeding 3,400 additional points to expand Shell's public EV charging infrastructure. In August 2025, Shell announced the wind-down of Volta Charging and its Volta Media division by year-end, citing a strategic shift to high-speed paid DC charging at Shell-branded sites, which includes dismantling over 2,000 stations and impacting around 190 employees; however, in November 2025, Shell agreed to sell a substantial portion of the Volta Media Network, comprising thousands of media-enabled chargers across 34 states, to Jolt Energy Pty Ltd., with the deal expected to close on January 1, 2026.
