Business
Algoma Central Corporation, a Canadian publicly listed marine transportation company (TSX: ALC), owns and operates the largest fleet of dry-bulk carriers and product tankers on the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway; provides domestic dry-bulk shipping services via 19 self-unloading and gearless bulk carriers serving steel production, agriculture, mining, construction, aggregate, cement, building materials, and salt sectors; transports liquid petroleum products through its domestic product tanker fleet across the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway and Atlantic Canada; operates ocean self-unloading dry-bulk vessels internationally as part of the world's largest pool of self-unloaders, carrying aggregates, gypsum, iron ore, coal, and salt; and holds 50% interests in global joint ventures including NovaAlgoma Cement Carriers with specialized pneumatic cement carriers, NovaAlgoma Short Sea Carriers with mini-bulkers up to 15,000 dwt supporting agriculture, cement, construction, energy, and steel industries, NovaAlgoma Bulk Holdings with handy-size bulk carriers, and FureBear with dual-fuel product tankers. The company also manages ship repair services through Algoma Ship Repair, a diversified facility in Port Colborne, Ontario, specializing in topside repairs and industrial services for Great Lakes and St. Lawrence vessels; operates investment properties in Ontario cities; and provides technical management for third-party vessels internationally. Founded in 1899 and headquartered in St. Catharines, Ontario, Algoma maintains operations across Canada, the United States East Coast, Europe, and global short-sea markets through offices in Montreal, Winnipeg, Lugano, Fort Lauderdale, Hamilton, and Bermuda. Recent developments include the delivery of Algoma Legacy, the first of three methanol-ready self-unloading vessels and the company's 100th vessel in September 2025, marking a milestone in fleet expansion and sustainability; approval of two newbuild 9,500-dwt mini-bulkers for the NovaAlgoma Short Sea Carriers joint venture with deliveries expected in late 2027; a total of 16 vessels under construction or on order, including 10 climate-friendly product tankers in the FureBear joint venture with Furetank AB and three methanol-ready Kamsarmax self-unloaders ordered with CSL Group; and the post-third quarter 2025 sale by NovaAlgoma Cement Carriers of a controlling stake in its wholly-owned vessels to P&O Maritime Logistics, a DP World subsidiary, to strengthen partnerships, reduce short-term borrowings, and support growth while retaining substantial ownership in the pneumatic cement carrier fleet.
