Business
Avangrid, Inc. Avangrid, Inc. (AGR) operates as a leading energy services holding company focused on regulated electricity transmission and distribution; natural gas distribution, transportation, and sales; and renewable energy generation across the United States. The company conducts business through two primary segments, Networks and Renewables; the Networks segment owns and operates eight electric and natural gas utilities—including New York State Electric & Gas Corporation (NYSEG), Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation (RG&E), Central Maine Power Company (CMP), The United Illuminating Company (UI), Connecticut Natural Gas Corporation (CNG), The Southern Connecticut Gas Company (SCG), Maine Natural Gas Corporation (MNG), and The Berkshire Gas Company (BGC)—serving more than 3.4 million customers primarily in New York and New England; the Renewables segment owns and operates approximately 80 energy generation facilities producing 10.5 gigawatts of power, mainly from onshore wind, as well as solar, biomass, and thermal sources, delivering output to investor-owned utilities, public utilities, federal and state agencies, and wholesale customers across 23 states. Avangrid, Inc. targets residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional customers with reliable energy delivery and grid infrastructure management; it maintains approximately $48 billion in assets, employs around 8,000 people, and conducts operations nationwide with offices in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Maine, and Oregon. Incorporated in 1997 and headquartered in Orange, Connecticut, the company functions as a subsidiary of Iberdrola, S.A. In late 2024, Iberdrola, S.A. completed its acquisition of the remaining 18.4% of Avangrid, Inc. shares for $35.75 per share, taking the company private while retaining its Connecticut headquarters and enabling more efficient investments in grid modernization and renewable projects to meet rising demand from utilities and data centers; in August 2025, Avangrid, Inc. signed a power purchase agreement with SmartestEnergy for 72 megawatts from its Lempster and Groton wind facilities in New Hampshire; the company continues construction and development of key renewable assets, including the Vineyard Wind 1 offshore project and the 120-megawatt Tower Solar project in Oregon.
