Business
Piraeus Port Authority S.A. (PPA.AT) manages and operates the Port of Piraeus, Greece's largest port and a key Mediterranean hub at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa; core activities encompass container terminal operations, car terminal handling, coastal shipping services, cruise passenger facilities, ship repairing, dry dock services, real estate management and logistics center support, including vessel anchoring, cargo loading and unloading, goods storage, car transportation, port facility maintenance, and provision of utilities such as water, electricity and telephone connections to ships and travelers. Founded in 1930 and headquartered in Piraeus, Greece, the company serves over 22,000 ships and 1.5 million passengers annually, ranking as Europe's fourth-largest container port and top passenger port, with primary revenue from cargo handling and passenger traffic segments targeting international shipping lines, ferry operators, cruise companies and automotive importers, particularly from China. Majority-owned by China COSCO Shipping with a 67% stake following the completion of a 16% share transfer from Greece's Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund in July 2024 under an amended 2016 concession agreement; recent developments include the Car Terminal expansion finalized at the end of 2023 to boost vehicle import capacity, ongoing infrastructure enhancements such as central port dredging for larger vessels and an underground road connection to the ex-ODDY area for improved logistics efficiency, alongside recognition as one of Greece's most sustainable companies for the fourth consecutive year and publication of its 2024 Sustainability Report in July 2025.
