Business
Austal Limited (ASX: ASB; OTC: AUTLF) is an Australian shipbuilder and defence prime contractor that designs, constructs and sustains advanced warships, defence vessels and commercial high-speed ferries for government and commercial customers worldwide. The company offers a diverse portfolio of products and services, including aluminium monohull and multihull ferries under the Austal Auto Express and Austal Fast Ferry brands; high-speed patrol boats and multi-mission offshore vessels; littoral combat ships such as the Independence-class for the U.S. Navy; expeditionary fast transports (EPF); and ship repair, maintenance and upgrade services through its facilities. Austal operates shipyards in Henderson, Western Australia; Mobile, Alabama, USA; and Henderson, Singapore, serving defence forces in the United States, Australia, United Kingdom and allied nations as well as commercial ferry operators across Asia-Pacific, Europe and the Americas. Founded in 1988 and headquartered in Henderson, Western Australia, the company expanded its U.S. presence significantly with the 1999 acquisition of the former Bender Shipbuilding yard in Mobile. In recent developments, Austal secured a major U.S. Navy contract in 2024 for additional Constellation-class Frigate support and Offshore Patrol Cutters; formed strategic partnerships with General Dynamics for collaborative defence programs; and announced expansions in autonomous vessel technology and sustainable shipbuilding practices amid growing global demand for advanced naval capabilities as of late 2025.
