Business
Sociedad Matriz SAAM S.A. is a Chilean multinational company primarily engaged in maritime transport, freight, and logistics services across the Americas. Founded in 1961 and headquartered in Las Condes, Chile, the company operates in 12 countries with a fleet of over 200 tugboats, providing harbour towage services including berthing and unberthing of vessels, emergency response and salvage rescue, firefighting, oil pollution control, and assistance in ship-to-shore, single point mooring, inland and marine terminal operations. SAAM also offers air cargo logistics at eight airports in Latin America, including aircraft maintenance and repair, cargo handling, storage, shipping, and ground transportation of passengers and freight. Additional services include real estate acquisition and development, equipment leasing, travel agency services, marine barge assistance, coastal oil rig towage, civil construction support, IT solutions, and tourism-related services. The company targets international trade and the freight transport sector, focusing on port and airport logistics infrastructure and operations. Recent major company changes include the acquisition of 100% ownership of Intertug for US$30.5 million to consolidate its towage position in Latin America, the divestiture of assets to Hapag-Lloyd for approximately $1 billion in 2023, and renewed long-term contracts with key clients such as Vale in Brazil. SAAM has expanded its air logistics division through new contracts with Aeromexico and UPS at Santiago Airport and renewed contracts with LATAM Airlines and Copa Airlines at Bogotá Airport. The company also acquired fleet assets for new operations in Canada and continues strengthening operational capabilities to sustain growth. Its strategic focus centers on consolidating towage industry leadership and expanding air cargo logistics services across the region, continually investing in fleet modernization and service diversification to enhance competitive positioning in the maritime and air logistics sectors. Sociedad Matriz SAAM S.A. is listed on the Santiago Stock Exchange and included in sustainability indexes such as the Dow Jones Sustainability Index Chile and MILA.
