- Ion Exchange (India) Limited pioneers water treatment solutions in India and serves as a leading provider of comprehensive water and environment management systems worldwide. Founded in 1964 as a subsidiary of the UK's Permutit Company and becoming fully Indian-owned in 1985, the company maintains headquarters in Mumbai, Maharashtra, with manufacturing facilities across India including Ankleshwar, Hosur, Patancheru, Rabale, Verna, and Wada, alongside international assembly sites in the UAE, Indonesia, and Bangladesh. It operates primarily in three segments—engineering, chemicals, and consumer products—targeting industries such as petrochemicals, power, steel, pharmaceuticals, municipalities, institutions, and households, with 77% domestic revenue and 23% from exports.
The engineering division, contributing around 60% of revenue, designs, constructs, and maintains customized water treatment plants including reverse osmosis (RO), ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF), ion exchange demineralization, multi-effect distillation (MED), multi-stage flash (MSF), activated sludge, membrane bioreactor (MBR), sewage treatment (STP), and zero liquid discharge (ZLD) systems; pretreatment solutions such as clarifiers, pressure sand filters, and chlorination; and specialized applications like vehicle wash recycle, oily waste treatment, high-purity water for paint shops, and seawater desalination. The chemicals segment, accounting for about 30% of revenue, manufactures ion exchange resins (cation and anion types including Indion brands), water treatment chemicals (boiler/cooling additives, fireside fuels, RO membrane chemicals, coagulants, flocculants, disinfectants, scale/corrosion inhibitors), specialty process chemicals for sugar, paper, and non-water uses, plus polyelectrolytes and polymers. Consumer products, roughly 10% of revenue, feature Zero B branded RO purifiers, non-electric purifiers, water softeners, and packaged drinking water systems; the company also offers resin regeneration services and 24x7 operation & maintenance support.
Recent developments include the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) approval in 2024 for the amalgamation of subsidiaries Global Composites & Structurals Limited and Ion Exchange Environment Management Limited into the parent company; stage-wise commissioning in September 2025 of a INR 450 crore greenfield manufacturing plant in Roha, Maharashtra, for ion exchange resins and chemicals; a strategic partnership with MANN+HUMMEL Water Membrane Solutions to produce advanced membranes in India; and major orders such as a INR 726 crore contract from Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) for Panipat refinery's water treatment, RO, demineralization, condensate polishing, ZLD plant, and O&M services, plus a INR 250 crore UAE award for a North Africa project. The company sustains a robust order book exceeding INR 3,650 crore, reported 14-31% year-over-year revenue growth in Q2 FY26 to INR 7,339 million with engineering execution up 16%, and pursues capacity expansions in resins and membranes from Goa facilities alongside export growth and new chemistries amid plans for greenfield chemical projects.
