- Corbion N.V. is a Netherlands-based sustainable ingredients company specializing in the development, production, and sale of biobased ingredients and solutions across food, health, and material sectors. The company operates primarily through two business units: Functional Ingredients & Solutions and Health & Nutrition. Its core product portfolio includes lactic acid and lactic acid derivatives; biochemicals such as gluconic acid; food preservation solutions; functional blends; bakery ingredients including bread improvers and egg replacers; algae-based ingredients like AlgaPrime DHA for pet nutrition; and bioplastics, notably PLA (polylactic acid) polymers produced through its 50/50 joint venture with TotalEnergies. Corbion serves diverse markets including food and beverage, animal nutrition, pharmaceuticals, personal care, medical devices, electronics, and biodegradable materials. The company maintains global operations with production sites in the United States, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, the Netherlands, and Thailand, supported by an international sales network. Founded in 1919, Corbion is headquartered in Amsterdam and listed on Euronext Amsterdam.
In the last two years, Corbion undertook a strategic restructuring announced in January 2024, consolidating its three prior business units into the current two to enhance operational efficiency. This restructuring included the divestiture of its non-core emulsifiers business through a sale to Kingswood Capital Management for $362 million. Corbion has launched innovative bakery solutions such as its Vantage 12E and 11E egg replacers to address fluctuating egg market conditions and support product consistency for manufacturers. With a focus on sustainability, Corbion continues to expand its bioplastics segment via Luminy PLA production and actively develops its Health & Nutrition segment with new launches in food ferments and high-potency vinegars. The company also announced a share buyback program in 2024 for up to €20 million to enhance shareholder value. Corbion leverages its advanced fermentation and preservation technologies to meet growing demand for sustainable, functional ingredients globally.
Corbion’s business strategy centers on sustainable growth through innovation in bio-based ingredients and materials aligned with global market trends toward health, nutrition, and environmental responsibility. Its customer base spans food manufacturers, retailers, pharmaceutical companies, personal care producers, and industrial partners in bioplastics. The company employs approximately 2,400 people worldwide and is positioned as a leader in lactic acid production and applications, underpinning its role in the bioeconomy and circular economy sectors. Through partnerships such as the joint venture with TotalEnergies and acquisitions to bolster its algae ingredients portfolio, Corbion continues to strengthen its technological and market position in the sustainable ingredients industry.
