Business
Discover Financial Services, a digital banking and payment services company, issues Discover-branded credit cards including the Discover it Cash Back Card offering 5% cash back in rotating categories and 1% on other purchases; Discover it Student Cash Back Card with 5% cash back on quarterly rotating categories for students; Discover it Chrome Card providing 2% cash back at gas stations and restaurants; Discover it Miles Card earning 1.5x miles per dollar spent; and Discover it Secured Card for credit building with cash back rewards. The company offers direct banking products such as Cashback Debit checking accounts with no fees; savings accounts, money market accounts, and certificates of deposit with competitive rates; IRA CDs for retirement planning; personal loans up to $40,000 with fixed rates and no origination fees; and home loans from $35,000 to $300,000 for debt consolidation and improvements with terms up to 30 years and no application fees. Through its Payment Services segment, Discover operates the Discover Network for international card acceptance; PULSE, a leading U.S. debit and ATM network; and Diners Club International, providing premium charge cards and global payment processing in over 35 countries. Founded in 1985 as a spin-off from Sears, Roebuck and Co. and headquartered in Riverwoods, Illinois, the company primarily serves U.S. consumers and merchants with additional operations in the United Kingdom and Singapore via offices in locations including Chicago, Houston, and Farnborough. In May 2025, Capital One Financial Corporation completed its $35.3 billion acquisition of Discover Financial Services following regulatory approvals, integrating Discover's networks including PULSE and Diners Club into Capital One's offerings while preserving Discover-branded credit cards; the deal enhances Capital One's payments capabilities as a competitor to Visa and Mastercard and triggers a $265 billion Community Benefits Plan for lending and investment. Discover exited its student lending business in 2024, reported strong Q4 2024 financials with 5% net interest income growth and payment services volume up 4%, and enhanced risk management and compliance programs ahead of the merger.
