Business
The Greenbrier Companies, Inc. (NYSE: GBX) designs, manufactures, markets, and leases railroad freight car equipment and related services to global freight transportation markets, serving railroads, leasing companies, shippers, carriers, and transportation companies; it operates through three primary segments including Manufacturing, which produces covered hopper cars, gondolas, open top hoppers, boxcars, center partition cars, tank cars, sustainable conversions, intermodal railcars, marine vessels, and railcar equipment; Maintenance Services, which provides wheelset reconditioning and repair, railcar refurbishment, parts manufacturing such as cushioning units, couplers, yokes, and structural components including side frames and bolsters through an extensive North American network; and Leasing & Management Services, which manages a fleet of approximately 17,000 owned railcars under operating and per diem leases, alongside railcar accounting, fleet logistics, maintenance management, and remarketing for institutional investors and carriers. The company maintains manufacturing and service operations across North America, Europe, and South America from its headquarters in Lake Oswego, Oregon, where it traces roots to a 1919 steel fabricator and was formally founded in 1974. Recent developments include record fiscal 2025 diluted EPS of $6.35 with core EBITDA of $512 million on nearly $3.2 billion in revenue, strong operating cash flow exceeding $265 million, a 10% lease fleet expansion to 17,000 units at 98% utilization, renewal and extension of $850 million in bank facilities into 2030 comprising a $600 million revolving credit facility and $250 million term loan while repaying $180 million of recourse debt, closure of a European joint venture manufacturing facility to achieve at least $10 million in annual savings, renewal of a $100 million share repurchase authorization, a quarterly cash dividend of $0.32 per share payable December 3, 2025, and a proposal to increase authorized common shares ahead of its January 2026 annual meeting.
