- EyeGene, Inc. is a South Korea-based biopharmaceutical research and development company that discovers and develops innovative biological therapeutics, advanced vaccine platforms, and diagnostic technologies, with a core focus on age-related vascular disorders, degenerative conditions, and infectious diseases. Founded in June 2000 and headquartered in Uiwang-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, the company operates within the biotechnology and healthcare sectors, targeting domestic and international pharmaceutical markets. EyeGene organizes its research and product pipeline across specialized therapeutic platforms, comprising: non-liposomal and cationic delivery-based messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines, including self-amplifying mRNA (sa-mRNA) programs utilizing proprietary cap-less transcription technology; EG-MCV4, a quadrivalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine for the prevention of invasive meningococcal disease; EG-rBTX100, a recombinant botulinum toxin candidate targeting therapeutic and aesthetic medical applications; EG-Mirotin, a polypeptide therapeutic developed for vascular stabilization in non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy; EG-Decorin, a topical polypeptide drug candidate designed to accelerate ischemic wound healing and treat pressure ulcers; EG-Myocin, a cardioprotective candidate engineered to mitigate myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury; adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene therapies for rare and degenerative retinal disorders; and adjuvant-assisted prophylactic vaccine pipelines, including EG-HZ for herpes zoster, EG-HPV for human papillomavirus, and EG-TB for tuberculosis.
In recent corporate and strategic developments, EyeGene underwent significant ownership and executive management restructuring following the acquisition of a controlling equity stake by South Korean pharmaceutical manufacturer Korea BMI Co., Ltd., which became the company's largest shareholder and appointed biopharmaceutical industry veteran Seok-Geun Choi as Chief Executive Officer to steer pipeline commercialization and leverage parent manufacturing infrastructure. In April 2024, EyeGene relocated its corporate headquarters from Seoul to Uiwang-si, Gyeonggi-do. To finance late-stage pipeline development and clinical trials, the company completed a rights offering totaling approximately KRW 22.6 billion, backed by over-subscription participation from Korea BMI. In clinical operations, EyeGene advanced its self-amplifying mRNA vaccine candidate BMI2012 into Phase 1 clinical development under a collaborative consortium with Korea BMI, Microuni, and Medici Bio, securing funding from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency and the Korea Health Industry Development Institute. Additionally, EyeGene was selected as a key joint research institution for South Korea's ARPA-H project to engineer next-generation mRNA platforms for long-term immune induction and viral clearance, underscoring its strategic transition toward government-backed pandemic preparedness programs and co-development partnerships.
