Rainbow Rare Earths Limited (RBW.L) is a mining development company focused on the exploration, development, and production of rare earth elements, primarily neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr) oxide, from its flagship Phalaborwa project in South Africa and the Gakara project in Burundi. The company offers rare earth concentrates and separated rare earth oxides, including NdPr oxide as its key product; it also provides technical consulting services for rare earth processing and development. Operations span South Africa, Burundi, and Australia, with headquarters in Melbourne, Australia, founded in 2016. The Phalaborwa project, located on a gypsum stack from a historic copper mine, utilizes innovative leaching technology to recover high-grade rare earths without traditional mining, targeting initial production of 1,300 tonnes per annum of NdPr oxide equivalent by late 2025. The Gakara project features high-grade neodymium and dysprosium-bearing minerals, with recent restart activities yielding over 200 tonnes of concentrate since Q4 2023. Rainbow Rare Earths serves the global demand for rare earths in electric vehicles, wind turbines, and electronics, positioning itself as a cost-competitive Western-aligned producer outside China. Recent developments include a US$25.5 million funding package in October 2024 from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation and a consortium led by White & Case LLP, enabling Phalaborwa's Stage 1 construction and first production targeted for Q4 2025. In September 2024, the company secured a binding offtake agreement with Ganzhou Orange Rare Earths New Material Technology Co., Ltd. for Phalaborwa's initial output, alongside a non-binding term sheet with Mkango Resources for Gakara production. Additionally, Rainbow achieved a processing milestone at Phalaborwa with 99% NdPr extraction efficiency and resumed concentrate production at Gakara in Q4 2023 following a sales agreement with a major Asian buyer.
