Business
WH Smith PLC operates as a global travel retailer specializing in convenience stores located in airports, railway stations, hospitals, motorway service areas and other travel hubs; it offers books and magazines, newspapers, health and beauty products, souvenirs, digital accessories, food and drink including brands such as Smith's Family Kitchen, Marks & Spencer Simply Food and Costa Coffee, as well as stationery, impulse items and entertainment products. Founded in 1792 and headquartered in Swindon, United Kingdom, the company conducts operations across the UK with approximately 594 stores, North America with over 320 stores primarily following acquisitions of InMotion in 2018 and Marshall Retail Group in 2019, and the Rest of the World segment spanning over 320 stores in 28 countries throughout Europe, Asia Pacific, the Middle East and India. In 2025, WH Smith sells its UK high street business comprising 464 stores to Modella Capital for £76 million, enabling a strategic shift to a pure-play global travel retail model while retaining its travel locations, overseas operations and brand; the transaction, backed by a £50 million asset-based lending facility from Secure Trust Bank Commercial Finance, positions the high street stores for rebranding as TG Jones with enhanced retail propositions and growth under new ownership.
