Business
Selective Insurance Group, Inc. (SIGI) is a holding company that, through its subsidiaries, provides property and casualty insurance products and services to businesses, non-profit organizations, local government agencies, and individuals primarily in the United States via independent retail agents and wholesale general agents. The company operates through four segments—Standard Commercial Lines, which offers commercial property, general liability, commercial auto, workers' compensation, and public entity insurance; Standard Personal Lines, encompassing homeowners, personal auto, and flood insurance; Excess and Surplus (E&S) Lines, providing coverage for risks ineligible for standard markets such as specialty property and casualty products; and Investments, managing fixed income securities, commercial mortgage loans, equities, short-term investments, and alternatives funded by premiums from other segments. Founded in 1926 and headquartered in Branchville, New Jersey, Selective maintains a regional focus with operations concentrated in the Eastern and Midwestern U.S., including recent geographic expansions such as entry into Kansas in 2025, plans for Montana and Wyoming in 2026, and presence across 27 states for Commercial Lines alongside growth in New Hampshire, the Southwest (Arizona, Colorado, Utah), and Mexico. In recent developments, the company has pursued organic growth through an 8.7% compound annual growth rate in net premiums written from 2017 to 2024, enhanced distribution partnerships targeting 25% agent market share, strategic diversification into E&S and mass affluent personal lines, raised its 2025 after-tax net investment income guidance to $415 million, authorized a new $200 million share repurchase program in October 2025, and continued dividend increases at a 10% CAGR over the past decade while renewing reinsurance treaties with improved limits and rates.
