Headquartered in Ladera Ranch, California, SmartStop operates with a fully integrated team of more than 1,000 self-storage professionals across 23 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and Canadian provinces, including a growing portfolio in the greater Toronto area and Alberta, targeting individual and institutional investors seeking sustainable distributions from self-storage real estate. In recent developments, SmartStop completed several strategic acquisitions in 2025, including a five-property portfolio in Houston, Texas, for approximately $108.1 million on June 17; a Class A facility in Rahway, New Jersey, expanding its New York MSA footprint on September 4; a property in Lakewood, Colorado, for $12.7 million on May 29; and a five-property portfolio in Alberta, Canada, for about CAD $97.4 million on August 26, while entering contracts for additional Canadian properties totaling $80.3 million. The company shifted its retail distribution relationship on June 12 by partnering with Orchard Securities, LLC, to offer Delaware Statutory Trust programs and Managed REIT offerings to independent broker-dealers and RIAs following the termination of its prior agreement. Additionally, SmartStop issued CAD $200 million in Maple bonds at 3.89% fixed rate and secured a CAD $160 million joint venture term loan from RBC for Canadian properties, alongside acquiring Argus for $21.1 million upfront plus up to $11 million earnout to expand third-party management to over 460 properties.
