Business
Talen Energy Corporation (Nasdaq: TLN), an independent power producer and energy infrastructure company, owns, operates and optimizes a diverse portfolio of approximately 10.7 to 13.2 gigawatts of power generation assets across 12 locations in the United States, primarily in the Mid-Atlantic region including Pennsylvania, PJM and WECC wholesale power markets; the portfolio features the 2.5-gigawatt Susquehanna nuclear facility, which represents about 50% of annual generation output and ranks as the sixth-largest nuclear-powered plant in the U.S., alongside natural gas, coal, oil and fossil fuel-fired plants producing electricity, capacity and ancillary services for commercial, industrial, residential customers and data centers. Talen Energy sells power into competitive U.S. wholesale markets, with a strategic emphasis on supplying reliable, dispatchable and zero-carbon energy to hyperscale data centers amid rising artificial intelligence-driven demand. Founded in 2015 through the spinoff of PPL Corporation's competitive generation business and headquartered in Houston, Texas, the company employs approximately 1,900 people and operates across four states including Pennsylvania, Ohio and Montana. Talen Energy targets high-growth sectors at the intersection of power generation and digital infrastructure, serving wholesale markets and key off-takers such as Amazon Web Services through long-term carbon-free power supply agreements for co-located data centers near Susquehanna; approximately 50% of its megawatt hours derive from zero-carbon sources, supporting commitments like a 75% CO2 emissions reduction by 2030 from a 2010 baseline, elimination of coal at wholly-owned facilities by end-2025 or 2028 and partnerships such as with Eos Energy for zinc-based battery storage systems at Pennsylvania sites. Recent major developments include definitive agreements announced in July 2025 to acquire the 1,045-megawatt Moxie Freedom Energy Center in Pennsylvania and the 1,836- to 1,875-megawatt Guernsey Power Station in Ohio from affiliates of Caithness Energy and BlackRock-managed funds for approximately $3.5 billion net, financed via $3.9 billion in senior unsecured notes due 2034 and 2036 plus a $1.2 billion senior secured Term Loan B, with an upsized $900 million revolving credit facility and $1.1 billion letter of credit facility; these transactions, accretive to earnings and aligned with Talen's data center power strategy, remain pending regulatory approvals including HSR and FERC with expected Q1 2026 closings. In Q2 2025, Talen expanded its AWS partnership to supply up to 1,920 megawatts through 2042, cleared 6,702 megawatts in the 2026/2027 PJM capacity auction generating about $805 million in revenues, and reaffirmed full-year guidance for adjusted EBITDA of $975 million to $1,125 million.
