Business
Aldebaran Resources Inc is a Canadian mineral exploration company primarily engaged in advancing the Altar copper-gold project located in the San Juan Province of Argentina. The company focuses on the exploration, acquisition, and evaluation of mineral exploration properties, with its flagship Altar project hosting multiple porphyry copper-gold deposits. Aldebaran’s main products and services include the exploration and development of copper, gold, and silver resources, with the Altar deposit containing measured and indicated resources totaling approximately 22.01 billion pounds of copper, 5.08 million ounces of gold, and 93.76 million ounces of silver, plus inferred resources of 9.83 billion pounds of copper, 1.71 million ounces of gold, and 49.04 million ounces of silver. The company additionally holds interests in other exploration projects such as Rio Grande, Aguas Calientes, El Camino, Catua, La Frontera, and Oscara within Argentina. In recent major developments, Aldebaran announced an updated mineral resource estimate for the Altar project in November 2024 and entered into an option to joint venture agreement with Nuton, a Rio Tinto venture, granting Nuton the right to acquire a 20% indirect interest in the Altar project in exchange for staged payments totaling US$250 million. Nuton's proprietary primary sulfide leaching technologies are currently being evaluated at Altar to improve processing efficiency and sustainability. Aldebaran also completed the acquisition of an additional 20% interest in Peregrine Metals Ltd, the vehicle holding the Altar project, increasing its total interest to 80%, with Sibanye-Stillwater Ltd holding the remaining 20%. Furthermore, the company announced plans to spin out its northern Argentina exploration projects into a new Argentine-focused exploration entity to better streamline its asset portfolio and focus on the Altar development. Aldebaran continues to advance towards a Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) completion, aiming to optimize project economics and environmental and social governance (ESG) credentials. Founded in 2015 and headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia, Aldebaran Resources operates primarily in Argentina with strategic partnerships including Rio Tinto’s Nuton division and Sibanye-Stillwater, which strengthen its technical and financial position. The company targets the mid-tier copper and gold production market by developing one of the largest undeveloped copper assets globally, focusing on eco-friendly, cost-effective processing methods and sustainable mining practices in the South American region. Aldebaran’s business strategy revolves around acquiring undervalued projects with high growth potential, advancing them through drilling, resource definition, and feasibility work, and leveraging joint ventures to de-risk and capitalize on large-scale resource development.
