Business
Atlas Salt Inc. is a development-stage Canadian mining company focused on advancing the Great Atlantic Salt Project located in St. George's, Newfoundland and Labrador. The company specializes in the production of high-purity underground rock salt primarily for bulk de-icing applications in the northeastern United States and eastern Canada. Its core products include mechanically mined de-icing salt and associated bulk salt products distributed via a dedicated marine terminal. The company’s production approach leverages a shallow, flat-lying salt deposit that enables drift mining rather than more capital-intensive vertical shaft mining, positioning it competitively on the cost curve. Recent major developments include a strategic partnership with Sandvik Mining and Rock Solutions, under which Atlas Salt will acquire advanced electric underground mining equipment including continuous miners, roadheaders, battery-electric haul trucks, loaders, and bolters. Sandvik also offered a $73 million financing arrangement to support this equipment acquisition and deployment. Another significant step is Atlas Salt’s signing of a comprehensive non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Hatch Ltd., appointing Hatch as the Lead Engineering Partner and Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) Partner for the project to enhance coordinated engineering and risk management. The company completed an updated feasibility study in 2025 confirming favorable economics with a post-tax net present value (NPV) of $920 million CAD and a 21.3% internal rate of return (IRR). The Great Atlantic Salt Project is strategically positioned less than 3 kilometers from the Turf Point deep-water port, enabling efficient bulk transport by Panamax vessels and three-day shipping to key markets compared to 2-3 weeks for foreign suppliers. The project is supported by 100% battery-electric operations powered by Newfoundland Hydro, eliminating greenhouse gas emissions and typical mining environmental impacts. Atlas Salt targets displacement of 30-40% of the North American salt demand currently met by imports from Chile and Egypt, aiming to supply governments and large commercial buyers across eastern Canada and the U.S. northeast with cost-effective, environmentally sustainable salt. The company was founded in 2019 and is headquartered in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. It remains focused on completing financing and advancing engineering and procurement to progress to construction and commercial production. Atlas Salt thus positions itself as a leading developer of a next-generation, low-cost, environmentally responsible salt mine with significant scale and strategic access to major North American salt markets.
