Business
Snam S.p.A. is a leading European energy infrastructure company specializing in natural gas transportation, storage, and regasification. The company operates a network of approximately 40,000 kilometers of natural gas pipelines across Italy and several other countries including Austria, Tunisia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, France, Greece, and the United Kingdom. Its core products and services encompass natural gas transportation and dispatching services; ownership and management of liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification plants; natural gas storage; development and operation of energy efficiency projects; biogas and biomethane production facilities; gas compression services; and sales of automotive compressed natural gas (CNG) compressors. Snam also provides engineering support and consulting services in technical and specialized fields. Founded in 1941 and headquartered in San Donato Milanese, Italy, Snam operates through several business segments including Transportation, Storage, Regasification, Energy Transition, and Other services. It serves importers, distributors, and companies supplying natural gas through a comprehensive infrastructure network. In recent developments, Snam has intensified its investments to around €3 billion in 2024, representing a significant increase over previous years, focusing on expanding and renewing its network infrastructure and capacity. It completed key acquisitions such as the acquisition of Edison Stoccaggio, integrating additional natural gas storage facilities with a total capacity of approximately 1.1 billion cubic meters per year, and Adriatic LNG, enhancing its LNG infrastructure. The company has also increased its LNG regasification capacity substantially, including capacity upgrades at Piombino and Ravenna terminals and an expansion of the OLT capacity from 3.7 BCM to 5 BCM. Snam is advancing a strategic shift towards becoming a pan-European multi-molecule infrastructure operator, emphasizing the energy transition through investments in hydrogen infrastructure, carbon capture and storage projects, and the integration of biomethane and renewable gases into its network. The firm has connected over 200 biomethane plants to its network and is developing the Adriatic pipeline line as part of its infrastructure expansion. Snam has also launched innovation initiatives focusing on digitalization, AI-driven asset management, and sustainability, aligning with climate goals and the Paris Agreement. Financially, the company reported a 14% increase in adjusted EBITDA and an 11% rise in net profit in 2024, alongside a 3% increase in dividends compared to 2023. Snam remains a key player in the natural gas infrastructure sector with strong focus on growth in sustainable energy solutions and infrastructure modernization across Italy and Europe.
