High Energy Batteries (India) Limited engages in the design, development, manufacture, and sale of high-technology batteries for defense and commercial applications. The company operates through two primary segments, Aerospace, Naval and Power System Batteries, and Lead Acid Batteries, offering silver oxide zinc batteries for aircraft starting and emergency power in MIG and other platforms; nickel cadmium batteries utilizing sintered plate technology for Jaguar, Mirage, Seaking, Sukhoi, Kiran, AN32, and various helicopter models including Cheetah, Chetak, Mi8, Mi17, Mi25, and Mi35; silver chloride magnesium batteries for torpedo propulsion and underwater applications; primary reserve batteries for missiles such as Prithvi, Agni, and BrahMos variants; auto lead acid batteries for cars and trucks; valve-regulated lead acid (VRLA) batteries for standby power; and other specialized batteries for launch vehicles, satellites, and power systems. Incorporated in 1961 and headquartered in Chennai, India, with manufacturing facilities originally established in Tiruchirapalli and Pudukkottai in Tamil Nadu, the company serves principal customers including the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) labs, and Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC)/Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), while exporting products to various international markets. In recent years, High Energy Batteries (India) Limited has pursued strategic expansions into emerging technologies, including the development and demonstration of a 1kW/10kWh vanadium-based redox flow battery (VRFB) in collaboration with IIT Chennai, completed during fiscal year 2021-2022, and announcements at its annual general meetings regarding diversification into fuel cells and flow batteries to address energy storage and electric vehicle opportunities. The company maintains a strong in-house research and development wing to upgrade existing designs for tropical conditions, indigenize naval armaments, and meet evolving defense requirements amid India's self-reliance initiatives. Promoter holding increased to 42.90% as of September 2025 from 41.73% in December 2024, reflecting strengthened insider commitment amid rising market capitalization.
