Business
Ellington Financial Inc. is a diversified real estate investment trust that acquires and manages a broad portfolio of financial assets, including residential and commercial mortgage-backed securities; residential and commercial mortgage loans; consumer loans and asset-backed securities backed by consumer loans; collateralized loan obligations; non-qualified mortgage loans; reverse mortgage loans; non-mortgage- and mortgage-related derivatives; debt and equity investments in loan origination companies; and other strategic investments. The company operates through two primary segments, the Investment Portfolio segment, which focuses on these diverse asset investments, and the Longbridge segment, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Longbridge Financial, LLC, which specializes in the origination, acquisition, sale, servicing, and securitization of reverse mortgage loans, including proprietary jumbo reverse mortgages and home equity conversion mortgages. Ellington Financial, founded in 2007 and headquartered at 53 Forest Avenue in Old Greenwich, Connecticut, primarily targets institutional investors and generates returns through yield and capital appreciation on its assets, while qualifying as a REIT that distributes at least 90% of taxable income as dividends; it conducts operations principally in the United States. In recent developments, Ellington Financial completed its merger with Arlington Asset Investment Corp. in December 2023, enhancing its scale with additional mortgage servicing rights, unsecured debt, and preferred equity to bolster its balance sheet and drive earnings accretion. The company fully acquired the remaining equity in Longbridge Financial from Home Point Capital in October 2022 for $75 million, solidifying its position in the reverse mortgage market and leveraging data analytics, securitization expertise, and capital markets access. More recently, subsidiaries of Ellington Financial issued $400 million of 7.375% senior unsecured notes due 2030 on October 6, 2025, rated BB- by Fitch, to extend its debt maturity profile and support portfolio growth; the company also completed a $243 million proprietary reverse mortgage securitization in December 2024 through Longbridge and priced an inaugural residential transition loan securitization in Q3 2025 to reduce short-term financing reliance. Ellington Financial reported strong Q3 2025 results with net income of $37.76 million and continues monthly common and preferred dividends, including for its Series B Fixed-Rate Reset Preferred Stock (NYSE: EFC-PB).
