Business
Emerson Electric Co. (NYSE: EMR) is a global technology and engineering firm that provides automation solutions, process control systems, and industrial software to essential industries including oil and gas, chemicals, power generation, life sciences, and water treatment. The company operates primarily through its Automation Solutions segment, which offers DeltaV control systems, measurement and analytical instrumentation, valves and actuators, discrete automation technologies, safety and productivity solutions, control systems and software, as well as test and measurement equipment; these solutions integrate advanced sensing, analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, edge computing, and the Plantweb Digital Ecosystem for predictive maintenance, remote monitoring, and operational optimization. Its legacy Commercial & Residential Solutions, largely divested, previously included climate technologies such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems, tools, and compressors. Founded in 1890 and headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, Emerson conducts operations worldwide across process industries, discrete and hybrid manufacturing, and high-growth verticals like LNG, semiconductors, and aerospace & defense. In recent strategic developments, Emerson completed the acquisition of all remaining outstanding shares of AspenTech in March 2025 for $265 per share, enhancing its industrial software capabilities in process optimization and asset management following its initial 55% stake in 2022; this move strengthens software-defined automation synergies in oil and gas, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. The company also acquired Flexim in 2023 to expand clamp-on ultrasonic flow measurement for liquids, gases, and steam, and Afag for electric linear motion and factory automation, bolstering its discrete and hybrid market presence. Additionally, Emerson sold its majority stake in Climate Technologies (rebranded Copeland) to Blackstone in 2023 and its remaining interest in 2024, alongside divesting the Safety & Productivity segment and completing the $8.2 billion acquisition of National Instruments (NI) in 2023 to advance test and measurement automation; these actions complete a portfolio transformation focused on high-growth, software-enabled technologies. In November 2025, Emerson outlined 2028 financial targets emphasizing organic growth from innovation in power, life sciences, and semiconductors, with plans to return $10 billion to shareholders through repurchases and dividends.
