Business
Ilika plc (LSE: IKA), a pioneer in solid-state battery technology headquartered in Romsey, UK and founded in 2004 as a spin-out from the University of Southampton, develops and commercialises next-generation batteries for MedTech, Industrial IoT, electric vehicles and consumer electronics applications. The company offers two core product lines: Stereax miniature solid-state batteries, which provide high energy density, fast charging, long cycle life and non-flammable safety for powering mm-scale active implantable medical devices such as neurostimulators, smart orthopaedics, orthodontics and biometric sensors, as well as industrial wireless sensors; and Goliath large-format solid-state batteries featuring oxide electrolytes and silicon anodes for electric vehicles and cordless consumer appliances, delivering enhanced range, rapid charging, reduced weight and superior safety over conventional lithium-ion cells. Ilika operates primarily from the UK with global customer engagement across Asia, Europe and North America, generating revenue through grant-funded development, customer evaluation prototypes, technology licensing and manufacturing partnerships. Recent developments include the transfer of Stereax manufacturing operations to US partner Cirtec Medical LLC under a 10-year licensing agreement signed in 2023, enabling commercial sample production targeted for late 2025 and supporting a pipeline of 21 medical device customers; completion of the £8.2 million HISTORY project with BMW and Fortescue Zero delivering a 50Ah Goliath prototype; execution of the £2.7 million SiSTEM project with Mpac plc, UKBIC and Tata subsidiary Agratas, adding 1.5 MWh annual pilot assembly capacity; a bilateral technology collaboration and heads of terms with Agratas for potential gigafactory-scale partnership; a post-period £4.2 million fundraising in June 2025; and a £1.25 million grant award from the Advanced Propulsion Centre's DRIVE35 PRIMED programme commencing August 2025 with HSSMI and UKBIC to produce Goliath A-samples on industrial equipment.
