Business
Spire Inc. (NYSE: SR) is a public utility holding company that, together with its subsidiaries, engages in the purchase, retail distribution, and sale of natural gas to approximately 1.7 million residential, commercial, industrial, and wholesale customers primarily in Missouri, Alabama, and Mississippi; the company operates through three main segments including Gas Utility, which encompasses regulated operations such as Spire Missouri Inc., Spire Alabama Inc., and other gas utilities providing natural gas distribution services; Gas Marketing, through Spire Marketing, which offers non-regulated natural gas marketing, risk management, and related services across the central and southern United States; and Midstream, which includes Spire STL Pipeline, Spire MoGas Pipeline, Spire Storage West, and Spire Storage Salt Plains, focusing on the transportation, storage, and propane pipeline operations of natural gas. Founded in 1857 as the Gas Light Company of St. Louis and headquartered at 700 Market Street in St. Louis, Missouri, the company, formerly known as The Laclede Group, Inc., rebranded to Spire Inc. in April 2016 following acquisitions such as Missouri Gas Energy in 2013 and Alabama Gas Corporation (now Spire Alabama) in 2014 that expanded its footprint. In a significant recent development, Spire Inc. announced in July 2025 an agreement to acquire the Tennessee local distribution business of Piedmont Natural Gas, a Duke Energy subsidiary, for $2.48 billion on a cash-free, debt-free basis, marking its expansion into Tennessee with nearly 3,800 miles of pipelines serving the fast-growing Nashville metro area and creating a new Spire Tennessee unit to boost its regulated customer base toward two million; the transaction, supported by a committed bridge facility from BMO Capital Markets and planned permanent financing via debt, equity, hybrids, and potential non-utility asset sales like storage facilities, aligns with Spire's growth strategy in constructive regulatory environments. Spire Inc. continues to emphasize system integrity investments, customer growth, and operational efficiencies, reporting fiscal 2025 adjusted earnings per share of $4.44, up from $4.13 in 2024, while maintaining about 3,475 employees and serving high-growth regions through its integrated utility and non-utility activities.
