Business
FreightCar America, Inc. (Nasdaq: RAIL) designs, manufactures and sells railroad freight cars, railcar components, and related services primarily for the transportation of bulk commodities and containerized freight products in North America; its core offerings include steel, stainless steel, aluminum and hybrid steel-aluminum railcars such as boxcars, covered hoppers, open-top hoppers, gondolas, intermodal and non-intermodal flatcars, coal cars, coil steel cars, mill gondola cars, and dynastack series cars, along with railcar repairs, conversions, leasing, and sales of forged, cast, and fabricated parts for shippers, railroads, and financial institutions. Founded in 1901 and headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, the company operates a primary 700,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Castaños, Mexico, with additional engineering and parts facilities in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and employs approximately 2,030 people focused on customized railcar solutions backed by proprietary welding processes and quality controls. In February 2025, FreightCar America closed a new $35 million asset-based lending revolving credit facility with Bank of America, featuring a 4-year-9-month maturity, SOFR + 175% interest rate that reduces borrowing costs by about 35% versus the prior facility, and enhanced financial flexibility to support working capital needs and growth initiatives including organic investments and potential acquisitions; the company has also consolidated manufacturing with a state-of-the-art facility in Castaños, Mexico, to optimize costs and production flexibility amid a strategic shift from coal-dependent cars toward diversified intermodal, hopper, and gondola products.
